Theme – Achan, Jephthah & Reuben are tragic types – people who caused terrible family pain because of their weakness. Achan was greedy and his family shared in the sin pattern. Jephthah, driven by insecurity, committed himself to a boast of godliness. Reuben refused to stand up to peer pressure. Each of these caused staggering familial pain. Throughout the Bible we see these same follies passed on from generation to generation. The lists of Judah’s and Israel’s kings especially expose the problem. Wonderfully, God has an answer.
Proverbs 15:27 exposes the opposite opportunity – the one who stands up to sin and breaks the cycle will be blessed. Further, the cycle breaker blesses others in the short and long term, not only by his decision to follow God but by the attendant forgiveness that always comes from a Christ follower. In Genesis 45, Joseph shows brilliant cycle-breaking & forgiveness that blesses his family and all the world. Rahab is another powerful illustration (See Joshua 2; 6:25; Heb. 11:31.) Jehoshebah, Joash, Amaziah, Uzziah, & Jotham show the power and legacy of a cycle-breaker. The Apostle Paul is another powerful example. From them we learn to keep the good and shed the bad that we’ve inherited.
Life Change Objective – That by God’s strength we live as cycle breakers.

Each of us is a child and has engaged in some form of this sin. All who are parents have been pained by rebellion as well. What can we do about the hurts we have endured and caused? What can we do to redeem apparently broken situations and lost relationships? The Lord offers us wisdom, comfort, and blessing: 1) He is the Great Parent. 2) He loves the rebel enough to break him and set the record straight. 3) He patiently waits for natural consequences. 4) He endured in His own Son the rebel price each of us deserved (Deut 21)
Life Change Objective – That we trust & respond to the Great Parent.

Sometimes the rejection is of us, other times truth or God is being spurned. Either way, it causes deep rifts of pain and isolation in our hearts. David & Eunice each endured spousal rejection but found the Lord sufficient for their pain. Mary Magdalene appears to have been completely outcast in her illness (Luke 8:1-3), but found Jesus to be more than enough for her life needs (19-21). Lydia is likely a single parent and certainly far from family roots, searching for help and truth. She finds in the gospel and in God’s church an opportunity for life and legacy beyond her wildest dreams.

Many Christians have been unfaithful to their marriage vows and thus opened their homes to despair and decay. To halt this epidemic and restore those who have fallen, the Lord gives specific direction and encouragement: 1) Understand the consequences. David opened his home to hellacious forces when he chose to sexually sin. 2) Come clean. 2 Sam 12:13 is a great model. 1 Cor 5 makes it clear that the damage spreads until we (in Wilson’s words) “clean out the corners.” For those who haven’t sinned, this daily battle is critical. For those who have, one can only get as healthy as one is willing to be honest. 3) Restore the fallen. Hosea 3 and Gal 6 teach us that the restoration process requires partners, is hard, and holy. 4) Rejoice in God’s renovation. The response to the Samaritan woman’s life change shows us how richly God can use the sexually deviant who turns to the Lord. 5) Live by grace. The age of grace in Christ means that restoration is full – even from the shame that dogs our hearts. We also must surrender our imaginary control and comparison games for the peace that passes understanding in Christ.
Life Change Objective – That we trust the sufficient & sovereign God.

This may have been a song sung as one walked through the mikveh before entering the Temple gates. Its amazing message is that God saves those who don’t deserve it. Hope is found only in Him. This psalm contains some powerful truths, including: 1) All are sinful and in need of God’s grace. 2) God is feared because He forgives. This seeming paradox is based on the truth that the forgiver is in charge. 3) The follower waits, i.e., she is bound together with God’s plan. 4) God’s Word is the source of hope. 5) YHWH’s hesed never fails. 6) God Himself will redeem His covenant people.

The NIV displays the quatrain arrangement better, and shows the two great divisions of the song into what God has done and what we need Him to do. Verses 1-3 deal with God’s restoration work, covering God’s great activity, it’s impact on the restored one, it’s impact on the observing world, and the ongoing blessing of ever-current joy. Verses 4-6 describes the continual need for restoration, the reality of honest grief communication with God, the “seasonal” style of God’s provision, and the response of joy.

Mercy is their need and desire. 125 adds the justice aspect of the theme. In the opening two verses, God’s people praise that because of Hid presence they are solid no matter the circumstances. Further, this presence of protection is eternal. The final two verses are a call for justice that rings out similarly to the cry for mercy in 123.125:3 not only hinges thought from the opening into the last two verses, it also encapsulates the justice/mercy theme. God mercifully and intricately works out even human leadership so that His people can do justice. They always have the choice to do right. Because of who God is and what He does, His people are empowered to imitate Him in justice and mercy.
Life Change Objective – That we would practice justice and mercy.

1.	Blessing those who curse us.

3.	Living for good. [Outline: What Jesus did; What we’re to do; How to do it.]

This is the first section of the general behavior section of the epistle (2:11-3:12). The section describes appropriate responses to struggles in every significant area of life – citizenship, employment, and home life. The eleven verses considered here exhort Christians to live differently because we are different and we know eternity can be different. Our changed behavior is motivated by a love for God’s glory and positive intentions for the lost people around us. (11-12) Expanding on the theme of glorifying God, Peter says that we have been called to find favor with God. God looks favorably on our submissive bearing of government and employment unfairness. This submission again blesses the world around us by silencing fools and interesting non-Christians (“finds favor” in v. 19 likely refers to humans). (13-15; 18-21a) Yet, one wonders whether Peter is calling for Christians to be doormats, continually wallowing in low self-concept and standing silently in tacit approval of evil? Wonderfully, Peter gives a resounding no, outlining instead the biblical concept of voluntary surrender. The Christian is completely free, and that freedom is purposefully harnessed to a four-fold objective: honoring all, loving Christians, fearing only God, and honoring the government powers. (16-17) When government or employment demands that one of those objectives be purposefully violated, other scriptures teach that God’s person should, as befits a free individual, speak truth and accept the consequences.

To emphasize this, Peter quotes three great “stone” passages from the OT, Isaiah 28, Psalm 118, and Isaiah 8. Looking at these texts, we see behavioral application for how to offer spiritual sacrifices through Jesus. This love (philos) should be expressed fervently (ektenos). Such familial affection is sincere (anupokritos) and pure (katharos). Looking at the disunity of depraved humanity, one wonders how such love could ever be experienced! Peter expresses the reasons such philos can and should be experienced in the local church:
1.	We’re children of the same Father. (1:23a and previous section)
2.	We eat at the same table; i.e., we are nourished by the permanent Word of God. (1:23b-25; 2:2-3)
3.	We have common enemies. (2:1)
